Facebook, Google and YouTube are known to almost everyone today. They are currently one of the most visited websites. Many users even access them more than once a day. It gets interesting when you take a look into the past. Over twenty years ago, some portals received the most clicks, which are almost irrelevant today.

THE BIG PLAYERS OF THE INTERNET IN CHANGE OF TIME
A video is currently circulating on the Internet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Uj1A9AguFs), which shows how the traffic to the ten most popular websites has developed over the past 23 years. The creator of the video, a student of philosophy, used official numbers and statistics for this. The journey begins in 1996, when AOL and Yahoo were the undisputed leaders. The former was one of the largest Internet providers in the United States of America, while Yahoo was a pioneer in terms of categorization and also offered a search engine. Other representatives in the top ten included Geocities, Netscape, Infoseek and Webcrawler.

Amazon appeared in early 1998. Initially books were mostly bought about it, but nowadays there are many people who make almost all online purchases through the world's largest internet retailer. The triumphal march of Google, today's number one, began at the beginning of the new millennium. It is not particularly surprising that the search engine is at the top, considering that Google is pre-programmed as a homepage for a large number of web browsers. If you search for something on the Internet, you “googled” it - this phrase is now even found in the Duden. This clearly shows the dominance the website has built up over the years.

A proverb says the following: "The Internet is for cat pictures and‘ adult videos ’." This seems to be very simplified - if you realize that social networks and various video platforms make up a large part of today's daily pageviews. Google in particular, which includes YouTube and Facebook, of which Instagram is a part, are the big players. The increasing monopolization also calls critics on the scene. They complain that the freedom and variety of offers on the Internet suffer from these market leaders. However, it must be borne in mind that each user is responsible for which pages they surf on. Examples such as AOL and Netscape show that an earlier dominance does not have to be an indication of the future.
